I compiled a list of 7 Secret Mediterranean Islands You Need to Go Before Everyone Else. The secret to a truly amazing vacation is finding a spot that is still relatively unknown. Unless you want to spend the entire duration of your trip fighting off tourists and waiting on lines, you will bode much better off in a relatively unknown area.

The problem here is that many people simply do not know where to look. That’s where I come in. I have traveled all over the world and I’ve managed to visit some of the most beautiful places that this world has to offer. To help you along in finding the perfect “secret” place to visit.

Kastellorizo, Greece

Not only is it the smallest island in Dodecanese, but it’s also the most beautiful by far. Vacation seekers can only reach it by ferry or air from Rhodes, which means that it is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Greek city life.

If you are looking to swim in crisp, bright blue waters and stare at those neoclassical, multi-colored houses that Greece is so famous for, this is undoubtedly the spot to do it. Even better, they allow visitors to swim off the rocks, which is something that everyone should consider doing at least once in their lifetime.

Cies Islands, Spain

Often referred to as the “Galician Caribbean” by locals, the island itself really does live up to its name. Somehow, even in the depths of the Mediterranean, the Cies Islands actually manage to look completely tropical, almost as though they are a vacation while on vacation in Spain.

Visitors can find themselves lying out on the warm, sandy beaches for hours at a time, taking in the breathtaking views and soaking up the sun. If you are looking for something truly relaxing, this is the place for you.

Vis, Croatia

Vis, to put it simply, looks like a set straight from a movie. Once you step foot in this Mediterranean island, you will inevitably find yourself wondering if this is even real. With cliffs for miles, sandy beaches, and beautiful waters, there is plenty for you to do without the inconvenience of being shoulder to shoulder with other tourists.

Whether you decide that you want to ride a scooter through town and taste the local cuisine or go sight seeing, there is a little something for everyone.

Ios, Greece

The unspoken name of the game here in Ios is romance. Scantily clad beautiful people all pile into the bars to watch the setting sun and enjoy a cocktail while a beautiful voice and acoustic guitar croon quietly in the background.

This is not the spot that you are going to go wild at, but rather a place to enjoy and soak up all of the beauty that the Mediterranean has to offer with the one you love at your side.

Ios also perfectly blends the ancient with the modern, leaving visitors both gasping at the natural beauty of the island and marveling in just how the locals have managed to keep it looking this way for so long.

Formentera, Spain

White sands and nearly transparent water? Yes, Formentera really is heaven on Earth. This small island just south of Ibiza is often compared to the Caribbean islands, and it’s all too easy to understand why once you manage to kick off your flip flops and take in your surroundings.

This is one of the more popular spots on the list, but visitors will never have trouble finding their alone time if they decide that they do want to check it out. Imagine a vacation where you can snorkel in crystal clear waters by day and enjoy a drink while watching the sun begin to set at night.

Kos, Greece

If you’re looking for fun, Kos is the place for you. While much of Greece is all about the charm of traditional buildings and sandy beaches, Kos has that and so much more. Visitors should be sure to check out one of the many waterfront bars all over the island, which is also a place of constant action and excitement.

If you ever grow tired of having fun, you can also relax a bit with an architectural tour. There is still plenty of that to see, which means that you won’t be bored for even a minute.

Amorgos, Greece

The best thing about Amorgos is that it’s completely remote. Aside from one week of high summer in August, you are almost guaranteed serenity and quiet no matter where you go.

Sandy beaches, beautiful homes, and taverns and restaurants for you to eat at until you’re too stuffed to try any more local cuisine are all definite pulls to this quiet, no frills spot of natural beauty.
